Great Egret

A tall, stately bird, the Great Egret stalks shallow wetlands for fish to spear with its long sharp bill.  Now protected, it was hunted to near extinction in the 1800s and 1900s  for its plumage used to decorate women’s hats.  It is non-migratory and can be seen year round in Mississippi and Louisiana.
